Chinese Medicine for Pregnancy & Postpartum

Supporting Wellbeing During Change

Chinese medicine offers a holistic framework to treat symptoms, and also looks at each person individually.  Assessment for treatment includes tongue diagnosis as a window to the interior condition of the body and pulse diagnosis.  With these tools, we look for patterns to help with diagnosis and treatment.   As a practitioner, my tools for treatment are acupuncture, moxibustion, acupressure, aroma acupoint therapy, cupping and other modalities.  (There are plenty of needle free options for those who truly cannot tolerate them.)

Wellness During Pregnancy

The body is undergoing so much physiological change during this time and wellness can be enhanced by receiving regular treatments to help with symptoms like:  feeling tired, nausea, swelling, stress (and other symptoms caused or increased by stress such as hypertension), colds, carpal tunnel, headaches, emotional ups and downs,  aches and pains, blood sugar regulation, prevent miscarriage, enhancing feelings of wellbeing and more.    If you are being medically managed for any risk factors, such as diabetes or hypertension, treatments can help to augment and support those treatments and manage stress associated with serious concerns.

Treatments provide one on one time and attention to help you feel supported during this time of change.  During a first visit, we’ll talk about your health history and look at issues and concerns.  Your treatment will address your specific concerns and support your wellness as a whole.

Help for Breech Babies

During the course of a pregnancy, babies sometimes move into a less than optimal position such as breech or transverse.  Chinese medicine offers a simple solution to this issue called moxibustion.  There is a point on the Bladder channel (UB 67), which we apply moxa (processed mugwort) to.  This point has an effect on the uterus and helps the baby to change position.  It’s recommended to begin treatment at 32 weeks, but babies can still turn if treatment begins later.  The benefit of acupuncture and moxibustion for breech is that this is a very gentle, relaxing and non-invasive way to treat breech position.

Labor Preparation and Labor Initiation

During the weeks before you go into labor it can be wonderfully supportive to receive weekly treatments to help you prepare for labor.  We can assist the body’s natural process of preparing for labor and helping the baby to move down, cervix to open and soften and help you to to feel supported in preparation for baby’s arrival.  This natural approach to labor initiation seeks to allow the body to move into the space necessary to facilitate labor on it’s own.

Postpartum Recovery and Help for Postpartum Blues/Depression

After baby arrives your body will experience a hormonal shift that may leave you feeling exhausted and emotional.  After building a person from within your own body, you could use some rebuilding of your energy!  Treatments at this stage focus on helping you recover physically, such as energy, healing, breast milk production, mastitis, emotional wellbeing and other issues.  This is a time for you to receive support so that you have what you need for your baby.

While treatments can help to support you physically and emotionally to help with postpartum depression, it is also recommended that you speak to a therapist and peer support group for further support.
